Observation Narrative
A low natural levee along Peters Mill apparently impounded seepage and overland flow to form this wetland. Plot located in the most open portion of the wetland. Soil in the center of the wetland is quaking peat. Alnus serrulata has a greatly reduced stature in the center of the wetland, reflecting lower nutrient status. The peat evidently acts as a barrier to the nutrient movement through the soil. Shrubs grow much taller around the periphery of the open wetland. Soil is high in Ca and has a higher pH (5.6) than surrounding upland forest soils.
Liparis loeselii has been collected from this site in the past, but was not observed during this survey.
